Indonesia wins first 2026 Asian Games gold in men's badminton
Indonesia secured its first gold medal at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, through a dramatic victory in the men's badminton team event. The Indonesian squad overcame an initial 0-2 deficit against China to win the final with a 3-2 scoreline.
Mohammad Zaki Ubaidillah, a 19-year-old athlete, acted as the decisive player in the fifth match, defeating China's Weng Hongyang with scores of 23-21 and 21-13. This victory marks Indonesia's first gold medal in the men's badminton team category in 28 years, a feat last achieved in 1998.
The comeback was fueled by Alwi Farhan's victory over Li Shi Feng and a dominant performance by the doubles pair Leo Rolly Carnando and Daniel Marthin. Following this win, Indonesia's position in the overall medal standings rose to 16th place. The nation has accumulated a total of 22 medals so far, including one gold, four silver, and 17 bronze.
