Asian Games in Japan face logistical challenges despite record medal count

The Asian Games held in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, concluded with mixed results regarding organizational efficiency and legacy. While Japan achieved record-breaking success in the medal tally, securing 269 medals including 83 golds, the event faced significant logistical challenges.

Japan Olympic Committee president Seiko Hashimoto admitted that higher-than-expected attendance contributed to accommodation shortages. Organizers had planned for approximately 15,000 participants, but the Olympic Council of Asia reported over 17,000. To manage costs, organizers opted not to build a dedicated athletes’ village, instead utilizing hotels, a docked cruise ship, and temporary wooden containers.

Operational issues included transport failures, such as buses arriving late or at incorrect venues, and athletes being stranded at airports. Additionally, while some events drew large crowds, others suffered from poor attendance. Hashimoto described the event as a “great learning” experience intended to inform future hosting duties in Japan.
