Nagoya Mayor apologizes for Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games logistical failures
The 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games have faced significant organizational challenges, prompting a public apology from Nagoya Mayor Ichiro Hirosawa. The Mayor cited human error and communication failures as reasons for a series of logistical disruptions affecting athletes.
Major issues include transportation failures, where shuttle buses have arrived late, failed to appear, or taken teams to the wrong venues. Notably, the Pakistan and South Korean men's volleyball teams were bussed to incorrect locations, resulting in a 45-minute delay for Pakistan's match and the cancellation of South Korea's scheduled training session. Other reported transport issues involved the South Korean basketball and U-23 football teams.
Athletes have also raised concerns regarding accommodation and dining. To reduce costs, the Games utilized temporary wooden units, cruise ships, and hotels instead of a traditional athletes' village, leading to complaints about cramped spaces and inadequate bedding. Additionally, some athletes reported difficulties accessing food due to hotel restaurant hours. Other controversies included the accidental playing of the North Korean national anthem during a South Korean hockey match.
