Asian hornet activity peaks in gardens during autumn
During September and October, Asian hornet (Vespa velutina) colonies reach their peak activity, with secondary nests potentially housing between 1,500 and 13,000 individuals. While these insects generally do not seek contact with humans while foraging, they become highly defensive if their nest is approached, shaken, or subjected to vibrations from activities such as lawn mowing, hedge trimming, or ladder use.
To maintain safety in gardens, experts recommend keeping a distance of at least five meters from suspected nests, which are often beige, paper-like spheres located in trees or dense hedges. Residents are advised to store sugary foods away, avoid garden maintenance near active nests, and report suspicious nests to local town halls or professional pest control services.
