Asian hornet activity sparks safety concerns in Netherlands and Belgium

Residents in the Netherlands and Belgium are expressing growing concern over the presence of large hornet nests following several serious incidents. In the Netherlands, a nest approximately one meter in diameter has been reported near a daycare center and a busy bicycle path, causing anxiety among local residents and business owners who feel municipal authorities have failed to take responsibility for its removal.

In Belgium, the rise of the Asian hornet has led to severe medical emergencies. Recent reports include multiple hospitalizations following attacks in Kluisbergen and a fatal incident in Ninove, where a 60-year-old man died after being attacked by a colony. Experts advise that if stung, individuals should immediately move to a safe, enclosed space and avoid swatting at the insects, as they release alarm pheromones that trigger further attacks from the colony.
