Asian hornet expands in Hungary, endangering bees and crop pollination
Experts warn that climate‑related warming and longer droughts are facilitating the spread of invasive insects across Europe. The Asian hornet (Vespa velutina) was first confirmed in Hungary in 2023 near the apiary in Kimle and, while not yet established, poses a serious threat to domestic beekeeping. The hornet can obtain up to 50‑60 % of its diet from honey‑bees, hunting near hives and causing chronic stress that weakens colonies.
Bees are essential pollinators for major Hungarian crops such as rapeseed, sunflower and fruit orchards, so a decline in bee populations could directly reduce yields. Authorities note that controlling the hornet is difficult because nests are often high in tree canopies and may contain thousands of individuals, requiring specialised monitoring and removal methods. Researchers also flag the possible arrival of the Asian mite Tropilaelaps, which could compound the pressure on beekeepers. A coordinated response involving beekeepers, scientists and governmental bodies is deemed necessary to prevent the hornet’s establishment and protect agricultural output.
