Asian hornet invasion becomes a national issue in France

The Asian hornet (Vespa velutina) has become a significant national issue in France, posing threats to resident safety and putting intense pressure on bee populations. Since its accidental introduction in the early 2000s, the species has spread across much of the territory due to high reproduction rates and an ability to adapt to urban, rural, and forest environments.

Estimates for 2026 suggest there may be between 200,000 and 350,000 nests present in France, though many remain unrecorded. This discrepancy highlights the need for improved mapping, reporting, and organized responses rather than isolated interventions.
