Asian hornet investigation launched in El Puerto de Santa María

Environmental authorities in Andalusia are investigating the potential presence of the invasive Asian hornet (Vespa velutina) in El Puerto de Santa María. This follows the recent removal of a nest from a tree that appears compatible with the species.

The discovery is considered unusual because Vespa velutina has a very limited presence in southern Spain compared to its widespread expansion in the north. While the Oriental hornet (Vespa orientalis) is more common in the province of Cádiz, officials are treating the find with caution due to the predatory impact of the Asian hornet on local bee populations and apiculture.

Previous sightings of the Asian hornet in the autonomous community are rare, with only a few confirmed cases in Los Barrios and Alhaurín de la Torre. Local residents had also reported a nest in a balcony in the town center, prompting further investigation into whether the species is establishing itself in the region despite climatic conditions that typically favor the Oriental variety.
