Asian hornet management and safety guidelines

As Asian hornet (Vespa velutina) colonies reach their peak in September, with some nests containing between 5,000 and 15,000 individuals, experts are providing guidance on managing their presence in gardens and ensuring safety.

During this period, colonies shift their focus from protein to sugar to fuel future queens and males. This makes fallen, fermenting fruits from trees like figs, apples, and pears a major attraction. To mitigate this, the Union Nationale de l’Apiculture Française (UNAF) recommends cleaning up fallen fruit daily starting in mid-August. Additionally, managing compost heaps by burying fruit waste under layers of dry material can prevent attracting hornets.

Regarding nest discovery, authorities advise against DIY destruction due to the risk of aggressive collective defense. Anses recommends maintaining a safety distance of at least 5 meters, while FREDON France suggests staying at least 10 meters away. If a nest is found, individuals should avoid vibrations and gardening activities nearby, take a photo from a safe distance for identification, and report the location to the local town hall or departmental control agencies.
