Asian hornet management: effective trap placement for gardens

To manage Asian hornet (Vespa velutina) activity around outdoor living spaces during late summer, experts suggest using specific placement strategies for attractants. During August, colonies require high amounts of sugar to feed larvae and future queens, often leading them to target human food and drinks.

Effective deterrent methods involve placing sweet baits—such as very ripe grapes, plums, figs, or sugary liquids—in a saucer or container away from seating areas. A key recommendation is the ‘3-10-20’ rule for trap placement: traps should be at least 3 meters from frequently used paths, 10 to 15 meters away from terraces, and approximately 20 meters from beehives or insect hotels.

Placing traps too close to dining areas can be counterproductive, as the scent acts as an olfactory beacon that draws hornets toward people. Furthermore, trapped hornets can release distress signals that attract more individuals to the immediate vicinity.
