Asian hornet sighted for the first time in Harz region
The Asian hornet (Vespa velutina) has been sighted for the first time in the Harz region, specifically in Elbingerode, marking a further expansion of the species in Saxony-Anhalt.
Originally from Southeast Asia, the species has been spreading across Germany since 2014, initially appearing primarily in southwestern states. Following a detection in Barleben near Magdeburg last year, these new sightings indicate the insect is moving into areas previously unaffected. The State Office for Environmental Protection (LAU) is monitoring the development and urges the public to report any sightings or nests.
