Asian hornet sightings in Mělník prompt search for nests

The Czech Agency for Nature Conservation and Landscape (AOPK ČR) is requesting public assistance following sightings of the invasive Asian hornet in the Mělník region, specifically near Liběchov. While individual hornets were observed in July and early August, authorities have not yet located a nest.

The Asian hornet poses a significant risk to honeybee colonies and other wild insects. Since its arrival in Europe from Southeast Asia in 2004, the species has been spreading across the continent. In the Czech Republic, the species was first recorded in 2023, though subsequent sightings have allowed for the successful detection and destruction of nests.

Experts advise the public not to attempt to catch or kill the hornets. Instead, citizens should maintain a safe distance, take a photograph for identification purposes, and report the sighting via email or dedicated mobile applications. Identifying the exact location is critical for locating nests, which are typically found high in tree canopies or within human structures.
