Asian hornet sightings rise in Germany and Austria

In Germany the invasive Asian hornet (Vespa velutina) has been recorded in several states, including Baden‑Württemberg, Brandenburg and Berlin, with experts warning that the species could spread further and threaten biodiversity, agriculture and beekeeping.

In Austria, a new primary nest was discovered in Lustenau, Vorarlberg, marking the third confirmed find in the region. Authorities and beekeepers have been urged to monitor hives, report sightings to the Velutina‑Meldeportal and avoid killing the insects, as they are protected and can be confused with the native European hornet.
