Asian hornet sightings rise in Switzerland and Germany

In the Swiss canton of Bern, officials are warning residents to look for small, round primary nests of the invasive Asian hornet (Vespa velutina nigrithorax) in sheltered urban locations such as under eaves, garages and hedges. Early detection and removal by cantonal authorities are urged, while the public is advised not to handle nests or use traps, which can harm protected insects.

In Brandenburg, Germany, a large nest was discovered under a roof overhang in Eisenhüttenstadt, and a fertile queen was found inside. The Brandenburg Environment Ministry announced that the fire brigade, assisted by experts, would dismantle the nest. This marks the first confirmed presence of the Asian hornet in the state, following earlier detections in Berlin in 2023. The species, native to Southeast Asia, entered Europe via France in 2004 and has spread across Germany, aided by milder winters.
