Asian Hornet Spread Threatens Bees in Germany's Märkischer Kreis and Karlsruhe

The invasive Asian hornet (Vespa velutina) is rapidly expanding in Germany's Märkischer Kreis, with the Iserlohn‑Kalthof beekeepers' association reporting numerous nests. The hornets prey on pollinating insects, raising concerns that they could diminish crop yields if the infestation grows.

Beekeepers warn residents not to approach the nests and to report sightings directly to the association, noting that even protective suits may not provide sufficient safety. The species, originally from East Asia, arrived in Europe via shipping routes and has since spread across the continent.

A citizen initiative in Karlsruhe has also called for immediate removal of Asian hornet nests, urging authorities and the public to act to protect local beekeeping and agriculture.
