Asian Hornet spread threatens European ecosystems

The Asian Hornet (Vespa velutina) is increasingly spreading across Europe, including Germany, posing a significant threat to local ecosystems. First detected in Germany in 2014, the species is now frequently found in states such as Baden-Württemberg, Rhineland-Palatinate, Hesse, North Rhine-Westphalia, and Saarland.

According to the Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union (NABU), the species is smaller than the native European Hornet and can be identified by its yellow feet and darker body. The spread is considered problematic because the hornets prey on native insects, including honeybees, wild bees, wasps, flies, and spiders, to feed their offspring. Additionally, they cause agricultural damage by feeding on grapes and other fruits. Due to these impacts, the European Union classified the Asian Hornet as an invasive species in 2018. Local nature conservation authorities in the respective German federal states are responsible for containment and control efforts.
