Asian hornets confirmed in Poland
Asian hornets (Vespa velutina), also known as yellow-legged hornets, have been confirmed in Poland. The first nest in the country was discovered in Wielka Wieś near Krakow and was subsequently removed by firefighters on October 19.
Originating from Southeast Asia, these hornets have been spreading across Europe for over 20 years, appearing in countries such as France, Spain, Italy, Germany, and the Czech Republic. Experts express concern that fertilized queens may have already left the colony to find overwintering sites, which could lead to the establishment of new nests in the spring.
These insects are distinguished from the European hornet by their darker bodies and characteristic yellow tips on their legs. While they pose a significant threat to the environment and honeybee populations, they can also pose risks to humans in specific situations.
