Asian hornets expand presence in Baden-Württemberg

The invasive Asian hornet is expanding its presence in Germany, particularly within the state of Baden-Württemberg. In Karlsruhe and surrounding areas, sightings are increasing; by the end of July, the State Institute for the Environment (LUBW) had recorded approximately 1,400 nests, roughly double the number reported during the same period last year.

These hornets pose a significant threat to local ecosystems and honeybee populations, as they hunt bees to sustain colonies that can grow three times larger than those of the native European hornet. While the species is not a direct cause for human panic, stings can be painful and may trigger allergic reactions in sensitive individuals. Experts advise against attempting to remove nests personally.

The Nature Conservation Union (Nabu) is currently conducting a study to track the spread of the species toward northern and eastern Germany. They are calling on the public to report sightings of Asian, Oriental, and European hornets via online platforms, ideally accompanied by photographs to assist in accurate identification.
