Asian hornets pose seasonal risks to French gardens

In France, the presence of Asian hornet (Vespa velutina) nests poses a growing seasonal risk to gardeners. Estimates for 2026 suggest there may be between 200,000 and 350,000 nests across the territory.

Nests often reach their peak size and activity during the autumn months, frequently hiding within dense hedges, shrubs, or climbing ivy. This timing coincides with common garden maintenance tasks in September and October, which can inadvertently disturb colonies. Certain fruit trees, such as fig trees, plum trees, vines, apple trees, and pear trees, are particularly attractive to these insects due to their sugary sap and fruit.
