Asian hornets threaten German honey production

The invasive Asian hornet (Vespa velutina) is expanding its presence across Germany, posing a significant threat to honeybee populations and the beekeeping industry. In Rhineland-Palatinate, beekeepers report massive attacks on hives, with some losing entire colonies. In response, authorities are planning a task force that may include the use of drones to locate and combat the hornets.

The species has also been confirmed in Saxony following a sighting in Leipzig-Grünau. Environmental groups, including NABU Leipzig, are urging the public to report sightings with photographic evidence to help track the spread. While the hornets are considered a low risk to humans, they are highly destructive to local insect species and agriculture. Experts warn against attempting to remove nests independently due to the defensive nature of the insects and the risk of misidentifying protected native species.
