Global markets decline amid AI spending concerns and Middle East tensions
Major global equity markets experienced significant downturns as investors reacted to rising geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and concerns regarding the profitability of artificial intelligence investments.
In the United States, the Nasdaq Composite fell approximately 2.6%, marking one of its worst sessions since June, while the S&P 500 dropped 1.21%. This selloff was driven by earnings reports from Meta and Tesla, which, despite meeting some expectations, raised alarms about the massive capital expenditures required for AI infrastructure. Semiconductor stocks, including Nvidia, AMD, and Micron, also faced heavy selling pressure.
Simultaneously, oil prices surged due to escalating conflict in the Middle East. Brent crude reached a five-month high, trading above $112 per barrel, following reports of Houthi rebel attacks on Saudi Arabian energy and airport facilities. Tensions were further heightened by reports that the US and Israel are considering potential military actions against Iran.
Asian markets also faced volatility. South Korea’s Kospi fell by 3.41%, hitting its lowest level since April, influenced by the slump in US tech stocks and rising energy costs. In China, the CSI 300 and Hang Seng indices also recorded losses, reflecting broader regional caution.
