Oak Harbor, Washington drives community-built pickleball courts

Residents of Oak Harbor, Washington, have partnered with a local homeowners association to convert abandoned tennis and basketball courts in the Castilian Hills neighborhood into five new pickleball courts. The Whidbey Pickleball Association expects to complete four of the courts by September, with the project costing under $100,000. By June 19, the group had raised $42,000 of the needed funds.

In Canton, Massachusetts, a citizens’ group led by Pam Berman is lobbying the Select Board for a permanent eight‑court pickleball facility after temporary courts became overcrowded. The group has identified three possible sites and is seeking additional funding following a $400,000 allocation that was later withdrawn.
