Asian stink bugs spreading across Bosnia and Herzegovina
The invasive Asian stink bug is increasingly prevalent across Bosnia and Herzegovina, particularly as colder weather prompts the insects to seek shelter for winter. Professor Nedžad Karić from the University of Sarajevo notes that while the species was officially registered in the country in 2019, climate change—specifically warmer summers and milder winters—has facilitated their survival and spread.
Although the insects do not pose a direct physical threat to humans or animals, they can cause significant damage to agriculture. They tend to congregate around buildings, in cracks, and in plant debris during this season.
To deter these pests without using harsh chemicals, a homemade solution of cinnamon and water can be used. Spraying a mixture of ground cinnamon and warm water around window frames, door thresholds, and entry points can act as a repellent due to the intense scent, though it does not kill the insects.
