Wall Street slides as oil climbs and Hormuz negotiations stall

U.S. equity indices fell on Thursday, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average down about 0.85% to 53,885 points, the S&P 500 slipping 0.18% to 7,710 and the Nasdaq Composite losing 0.06% to 26,348. Brent crude futures rose above $83 a barrel, up roughly 1‑1.6%, while U.S. WTI crude also gained about 1%. Iran presented a draft proposal that would bar U.S. and Israeli vessels from the Strait of Hormuz and said it is close to a deal with Oman to reopen the waterway, adding geopolitical tension to oil markets. Investors awaited the July U.S. non‑farm payrolls report for clues on Federal Reserve policy. Asian markets showed mixed reactions: Japan’s Nikkei 225 fell to around 65,500, South Korea’s Kospi slipped to about 6,242, Taiwan’s Taiex dropped to 0.4%, while China’s Shanghai Composite rose to roughly 3,931. European benchmarks edged higher, with Germany’s DAX up 0.39%, France’s CAC 40 up 0.26% and Britain’s FTSE 100 up 0.16%. Strong corporate earnings tempered some concerns, but the combination of higher oil prices, Hormuz negotiations and pending U.S. jobs data kept market sentiment cautious.
