Asian tiger mosquito prevention urged in Germany

Health authorities in Germany are urging residents to take preventative measures against the Asian tiger mosquito as the season ends. Although adult mosquitoes die off with falling temperatures, their eggs are highly resilient and can survive the winter to hatch in the spring.

To reduce the population for the upcoming year, citizens are advised to eliminate potential breeding sites. This includes emptying water containers, scrubbing the inner edges of vessels with hot water (60 to 70 degrees Celsius) or brushes to remove stuck eggs, and storing containers in dry, protected areas like sheds or basements.

In regions like Bonn, health officials have warned that while local transmission of diseases such as Dengue or Zika has not yet occurred, the risk exists if an infected traveler is bitten by a local mosquito. Experts emphasize that eliminating standing water in items like watering cans, buckets, and rain barrels is the most effective way to curb the spread.
