Asian tiger mosquitoes spread in Vienna and Friedrichshafen

The Asian tiger mosquito is expanding its presence across parts of Austria and Germany. In Vienna, the species has been established since 2021 and is increasingly prevalent, sometimes outcompeting local mosquito species. While experts from AGES note that the risk of transmitting tropical viruses remains low, the mosquitoes are highly active from morning until late at night. Unlike Graz, which has implemented birth control measures by releasing sterilized males, Vienna has no plans for large-scale eradication.

In Friedrichshafen, Germany, recent sightings have been reported in the Zeppelindorf area. While a full population has not yet been confirmed, local authorities are urging citizens to prevent breeding by eliminating standing water. Recommended actions include emptying flowerpot saucers, covering rain barrels with fine mesh, and clearing gutters to remove debris that could collect water.
