ASICS warns of global decline in physical activity levels

ASICS has released a global research report ahead of World Mental Health Day, warning of a significant decline in physical activity levels worldwide. The study, which surveyed 34,000 people across 31 markets, reveals that individuals spend approximately 86% of their waking hours without movement. Currently, 53% of adults do not meet recommended physical activity guidelines, a figure projected to rise to 56% by 2035.

To address this, the company is launching the ‘Movement Conservation Project’ and introducing the world’s first ‘Movement Conservation Status’ system. Inspired by biological conservation, this framework classifies activity levels into three categories: ‘Active’ (150+ minutes per week), ‘At Risk’ (30–149 minutes), and ‘Endangered’ (fewer than 30 minutes).

The research highlights that modern conveniences, such as online shopping and remote work, contribute to sedentary lifestyles. In Australia, nearly half the population is classified as ‘At Risk’ or ‘Endangered,’ with projections suggesting this could reach 54% by 2035. In Taiwan, over half of those aged 18 to 24 fail to meet activity recommendations. The report emphasizes that even brief periods of movement, such as 15 minutes daily, can significantly improve mental well-being, stress resistance, and focus.
