ASILIVAL resumes protests at Valdeorras Hospital over silicosis and medical services

The Association of Those Affected by Silicosis of Valdeorras (ASILIVAL) is resuming protests in front of the Valdeorras Public Hospital. The group is demanding a permanent pulmonology service in O Barco, arguing that the current system of periodic consultations is insufficient.

During a recent assembly, ASILIVAL spokesperson José Rodríguez highlighted data from the National Institute of Silicosis in Oviedo, which reported 72 new cases of silicosis linked to the slate sector in Galicia for 2025. The association is calling for a meeting with health officials and slate industry representatives to reconcile discrepancies between official health data and the number of affected individuals reported by the collective.
