Asim Iftikhar Ahmad appointed Pakistan’s new Foreign Secretary

Pakistan has appointed senior career diplomat Asim Iftikhar Ahmad as the country’s new Foreign Secretary. The appointment was approved by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and announced by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar.

Asim Iftikhar Ahmad currently serves as Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York. His background includes roles such as Foreign Office spokesperson and Additional Secretary for UN and Diplomatic Economy. He is expected to assume his new duties following the conclusion of his current assignment and the completion of the transition process.

He succeeds Amna Baloch, whose tenure is scheduled to end in the third week of September. Following her departure from the Foreign Office, Baloch has been appointed as Pakistan’s ambassador to Turkey.
