Asim Kurjak, prominent gynecologist and academic, dies at 85

Asim Kurjak, a renowned gynecologist and specialist in perinatal medicine, has passed away at the age of 85. Born in Kotor Varoš, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kurjak was a pioneer in the application of ultrasound in gynecology and obstetrics in Croatia.

Throughout his career, Kurjak served as a regular professor at the University of Zagreb's Faculty of Medicine and led the gynecology and obstetrics clinic at Sveti Duh Hospital in Zagreb. He held leadership roles in several international organizations, including the Academy of Medical Sciences of Croatia and the European and World Associations for Perinatal Medicine. His academic contributions include writing or editing over 120 books and publishing more than 1,000 scientific papers.

Despite his international prestige and numerous honors, such as the Ruđer Bošković Award, his career was marked by controversy. In 2006, the British Medical Journal accused him of plagiarism, a finding later supported by ethics committees in Croatia. Additionally, he faced legal proceedings regarding a 2002 case involving the death of a mother and child at Sveti Duh Hospital, though a conviction for concealing medical error did not become final due to a legal stay.
