Asinara and Pianosa prison reopening proposed to manage high-risk inmates

The Autonomous Union of Prison Police (SAPPE) has proposed reopening the Asinara and Pianosa prisons to manage high-risk inmates. SAPPE General Secretary Donato Capece called on Justice Minister Carlo Nordio to adopt this strategy to address the rising number of assaults and critical incidents within the penitentiary system. Capece argued that simply transferring violent inmates between ordinary prisons is ineffective due to overcrowding and fails to address the root of the problem.

In a separate but related development, a group of 26 intellectuals and professionals in Sardinia has issued an appeal to national and local institutions to rethink the region's role in the penal system. The group seeks to move beyond the concept of Sardinia as an ‘island-prison’—a perception characterized by isolation and control—and instead promote a system focused on responsibility, reconstruction, and civil development.
