Asisat Oshoala honored by FIFA for legendary U-20 World Cup campaign
FIFA has honored Nigerian forward Asisat Oshoala for her performance at the 2014 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Canada, describing her seven-goal tally as one of the most defining individual campaigns in the tournament’s history.
Oshoala earned both the Golden Boot and the Golden Ball during the competition. After a quiet group stage, she scored twice in the quarter-final against New Zealand and four goals in the semi-final against DPR Korea. Although Nigeria lost 1-0 to Germany in the final, Oshoala’s achievement remains historic as she is the only African player to win the tournament’s Golden Boot.
FIFA noted that the 2014 tournament served as a launchpad for Oshoala’s professional career, leading to her success in the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations and her subsequent appearances in multiple senior FIFA Women’s World Cups.
