Torino police notify suspects following violent Askatasuna protest clashes

Italian authorities have notified several individuals of upcoming preliminary interrogations following violent clashes during a national demonstration on January 31, 2026. The protest was organized against the eviction of the Askatasuna social center in Torino.

The Public Prosecutor has requested 19 precautionary measures for various offenses, including aggravated resistance, injury to public officials, property damage, robbery, and attempted murder. During the two-hour confrontation, over a thousand protesters, many wearing black and masks, reportedly attacked law enforcement with stones, bottles, explosives, and incendiary devices.

The violence resulted in 103 injuries to law enforcement officers, with some requiring up to 100 days of medical prognosis. Additionally, a mobile unit vehicle was set on fire, and an officer was assaulted with a hammer after his equipment was forcibly taken. The unrest also caused damage to local businesses, residential buildings, and private vehicles.

Police operations included 14 home searches conducted across multiple cities, including Torino, Genova, Cagliari, Firenze, Imperia, and Reggio Emilia, to gather further evidence for the ongoing investigation.
