Šasko Lake requires formal protection against development pressure

The NGO Green Home organized a training session in Ulcinj focused on strengthening transparency and environmental protection for the Šasko Lake area. The initiative aims to foster independent research, monitor planned investments, and increase public participation in decision-making processes that impact the region.

Azra Vuković, Director of Green Home, emphasized the urgent need to formally establish the lake as a protected area. Despite being recognized for protection in spatial and planning documents, no formal protected status has been implemented since the NGO began its initiative in 2016.

Vuković warned that the sensitive ecosystem is facing significant developmental pressure. Current plans for the area and its immediate surroundings include various projects such as tourist complexes, hotels, golf courses, and solar power plants. She noted that the small and highly valuable space cannot sustain such intense development pressure without formal protections in place.
