ASKUL and partners launch dual-use disaster prevention backpack

ASKUL, Tokyo Shoko Sha, and TRIFE DESIGN have announced the joint development of a “Disaster Prevention Backpack Set.” Ahead of Disaster Prevention Day on September 1, the product will be available for limited quantity sales starting August 26 via the crowdfunding platform Makuake at a price of 25,000 yen.

The 28L backpack is designed for dual use, functioning as a standard bag for commuting or schoolwork while allowing users to quickly carry out an internal staff sack containing emergency supplies during a disaster. The bag is lightweight at approximately 530g and is constructed from “ReTA BASE,” a recycled fabric made from used clear folders and discarded plastic bottle caps.

Supervised by disaster prevention experts, the included staff sack contains 13 essential items for the period between a disaster occurring and reaching an evacuation center. These items include a first aid kit, aluminum thermal sheets, masks, long-lasting heat packs, a 3L folding water bag, a wide FM-compatible pocket radio, work gloves, 500ml of preserved water, preserved yokan (sweet bean jelly), pocket tissues, wet wipes, a disaster guide, and five uses of emergency toilets.
