Asl di Viterbo to recover 40,000 euros from 14 doctors

The Asl di Viterbo has ordered 14 family doctors to repay a total of over 40,000 euros due to exceeding pharmaceutical spending limits during the first half of 2025. This action follows an audit by the inter-district prescription appropriateness commission, which found that certain doctors prescribed medications beyond the thresholds established by Lazio regional regulations.

The specific medications identified in the audit include Omega 3, proton pump inhibitors (Aifa note I), lidocaine patches, ranolazine, and cholecalciferol (Vitamin D). Individual repayment amounts range from approximately 1,000 euros to over 6,300 euros.

This is a recurring issue in the province; a similar case occurred in 2024 involving 16 doctors and nearly 38,000 euros. The current situation has prompted debate among medical professionals regarding the boundary between legitimate clinical oversight and the individual economic responsibility of practitioners.
