Italian Chamber approves bill to protect family caregivers
The Italian Chamber of Deputies has approved a bill aimed at recognizing and protecting family caregivers. The legislation, which passed its first reading with 153 votes in favor, seeks to provide formal recognition and economic support to individuals caring for relatives with disabilities or non-self-sufficiency.
Key provisions include raising the ISEE income threshold for financial aid from 15,000 to 25,000 euros to expand eligibility. The government has outlined significant funding, including 257 million euros for 2027 and approximately 260 million euros annually starting in 2028. Benefits may include tax-free quarterly contributions of up to 1,200 euros, labor protections such as flexible hours, and psychological support.
While political groups like Forza Italia have praised the measure as a long-awaited response to family needs, the Democratic Party (Pd) has emphasized the need for permanent social service networks rather than just temporary economic aid. Locally, initiatives such as the ‘Oss a domicilio’ project in Prato and specialized autism care centers in Molise continue to address the practical needs of families in the field.
