ASML advances EUV technology through LPP and High-NA milestones

ASML is prioritizing the advancement of its existing Laser-Produced Plasma (LPP) technology over alternative light source methods, such as the particle accelerator solutions supported by Elon Musk. The company aims to increase LPP power from its current 500W level to 1,000W to overcome challenges in extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography. While particle accelerator-based technologies like free-electron lasers could theoretically reduce contamination and increase power, they face significant hurdles regarding cost, scale, and complexity, with commercial viability estimated to be at least a decade away.

In a separate manufacturing milestone, Intel and ASML have successfully processed over one million wafers using High-NA EUV lithography systems. This achievement demonstrates the operational maturity and scalability of High-NA technology, which utilizes a 0.55 numerical aperture lens to etch finer patterns more efficiently. The milestone follows Intel's installation of the first commercial High-NA system in 2024 and has been linked to a significant increase in Intel's stock price.
