TSMC scales 2nm chip production and expands US investment

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) is significantly accelerating its production capabilities to meet surging demand for artificial intelligence and high-performance computing chips. The company aims to increase its 2nm node capacity to 120,000 wafers per month by the end of 2026, a 20% increase over previous targets. To support this, TSMC is activating five new 2nm production facilities this year across Hsinchu and Kaohsiung. Major clients, including Apple, Nvidia, AMD, Qualcomm, and MediaTek, have reportedly increased their 2nm chip orders by 10% to 20%.

Looking further ahead, TSMC plans to begin pilot production for its A14 (1.4nm) process in 2027, with mass production targeted for 2028. This development comes as competitors like Intel aim to close the gap, with Intel's 14A process expected to be within 5% of TSMC's A14 technology.

In terms of geographic expansion, Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs has approved USD 44 billion in TSMC investments for its operations in the United States since 2020. This is part of a broader, multi-billion dollar investment plan to expand advanced wafer fabrication and packaging capacity in Arizona.
