ASML faces potential US export bans on chip equipment to China

ASML is facing significant geopolitical pressure due to the proposed MATCH Act in the United States. This legislation aims to compel allies to implement comprehensive export bans on chip-making equipment to China. The potential restrictions could extend beyond advanced technology to include older Deep Ultraviolet (DUV) machines and even the maintenance and servicing of existing equipment already installed in China.

While China previously accounted for 36 percent of ASML's revenue, that figure has recently decreased to approximately 19 percent. Analysts suggest the company may offset potential losses from Chinese restrictions through the global AI boom and rising demand from other regions, such as South Korea, which accounted for 45 percent of ASML's machine sales in the first quarter of this year.

Technologically, the company is navigating the transition to High-NA EUV lithography. While Intel is moving toward high-volume production with this technology, other major manufacturers like TSMC and Samsung are planning broader implementation at a later stage due to high costs and the need for further technological maturation.
