ASML reports zero net sales of chip-making systems in Europe
ASML, Europe's most valuable technology company, reported zero net sales of chip-making systems in Europe during the first half of the year. Frank Heemskerk, ASML's Vice President of Global Public Affairs, attributed this lack of sales to a deficiency in local investment and the absence of new wafer fabrication plants being constructed on the continent.
In contrast to the stagnation in Europe, demand for advanced semiconductor equipment is surging in Asia and North America, driven by the expansion of AI computing power. In the first half of the year, mainland China led ASML's regional net system sales at 36%, followed by South Korea at 22% and Taiwan at 13%. Asia overall accounts for approximately 80% of the company's sales.
Challenges facing European semiconductor expansion include high energy costs and prolonged regulatory and permitting processes. While the EU Chips Act was implemented in 2023 to boost regional capacity, analysts suggest the goal of doubling Europe's global market share by 2030 may be difficult to achieve. Meanwhile, ASML's extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography machines, which are essential for advanced chip production, are nearly sold out through 2027.
