ASML to expand Japanese workforce to support advanced chip manufacturing

ASML Japan plans to expand its local workforce from 500 to approximately 700 employees by 2030 to support advanced semiconductor manufacturing in the country. Shojiro Fujiwara, president of ASML Japan, announced the move during a press conference.

The expansion aims to provide increased support for clients such as Rapidus, which intends to begin mass production of 2-nanometer chips in fiscal year 2027. ASML has already established a presence in Chitose, Hokkaido, near Rapidus facilities, and is considering further operations in Kumamoto to support upcoming projects by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) and a Sony-TSMC joint venture.

As the sole provider of extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography machines, ASML plays a critical role in the high-end chip market. The company reported that its lithography system sales in Japan grew by approximately 40% in 2025, totaling 1.2 billion euros.
