Liga de Expansión clubs appeal to CAS over promotion and relegation
Five clubs from Mexico’s Liga de Expansión—Universidad de Guadalajara, Atlético La Paz, Atlético Morelia, Cancún FC, and Mineros de Zacatecas—have filed a new appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). The appeal challenges the decision by the Mexican Football Federation (FMF) and Liga MX to maintain the suspension of promotion and relegation for the 2026-27 season.
The system was originally suspended in 2020 due to economic uncertainties caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. Although a CAS ruling in September 2025 suggested the possibility of restoring the system, current regulations state that Liga MX clubs will not be relegated and Expansión MX clubs will not be promoted.
The Asociación Mexicana de Futbolistas Profesionales (AMFpro) has responded by demanding that players be consulted on decisions that directly impact their professional working conditions. While the association supports the players' rights, it has maintained a neutral stance regarding the specific demand to reinstate the promotion and relegation system.
Additionally, politician Jorge Álvarez Máynez has filed a formal complaint with the National Antitrust Commission, characterizing the lack of promotion and relegation as an illegal barrier to market competition within the sport.
