Asociación Nacional Republicana marks 139 years amid internal divisions
The Asociación Nacional Republicana (ANR) marks its 139th anniversary amid internal political friction and social pressure. While the party maintains significant control over the presidency and Congress, visible divisions are emerging within the ruling Honor Colorado movement. Tensions are rising between the “peñismo” faction, aligned with President Santiago Peña, and the “cartismo” wing, associated with former President Horacio Cartes.
Internal criticism has surfaced regarding the administration's handling of public health and the ongoing conflict with medical professionals. Additionally, Senate members from the cartista faction have requested reports from the Central Bank of Paraguay concerning bank mergers and the management of public funds and social security deposits.
As the party commemorates its founding, the government also faces mounting pressure from social sectors, including potential strikes by doctors and teachers.
