Ghana OSP probes alleged GH¢70,000 payment in parliamentary vetting
The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has launched a preliminary investigation into a purported memorandum alleging a GH¢70,000 payment linked to the vetting of ministerial and Supreme Court nominees by Parliament’s Appointments Committee. The document, which circulated on social media, claims that Deputy Minority Leader and Asokwa MP Patricia Appiagyei received and subsequently returned the funds.
Mrs. Appiagyei has vehemently denied the allegations, describing the memorandum as a fabrication and stating she never received any such payment. She further noted that the signature on the document appears to be a forgery that could have been created through scanning technology.
Parliament and the Speaker have welcomed the OSP's probe, calling for a thorough investigation to establish the authenticity of the document and the veracity of the claims. Anti-corruption groups, including Transparency International Ghana and the Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition, have demanded full disclosure from Parliament regarding the source and authorization of the alleged funds. Former Auditor-General Daniel Yaw Domelevo has also supported the investigation, raising concerns about the appropriateness of any payments to MPs being sourced from the Presidency rather than Parliament's own budget.
