Dominican Social Security group pushes to triple medication coverage to RD$30,000
The Asociación Nacional de Afiliados a la Seguridad Social (Asonafiss) submitted a formal proposal to the Consejo Nacional de la Seguridad Social (CNSS) demanding that the annual limit for outpatient medication be raised from RD$12,000 to RD$30,000. The request also calls for the unused portion of the allowance to be cumulative across periods and for the system to cover multiple complementary drugs prescribed for the same illness when medically justified.
Asonafiss gave the CNSS a one‑week deadline to respond and warned that, absent progress, it will organise peaceful street demonstrations and pickets at the headquarters of major health risk administrators. Consultant Máximo Calzado noted that health insurers have earned more than RD$20 billion between 2010 and 2024, averaging about RD$3 billion annually, while the proposal would affect roughly 11 million Dominican citizens. The association argues that the changes could be implemented through a CNSS resolution without amending the Social Security law.
