Aspect Distance Education Hub supports students facing school refusal

The Aspect Distance Education Hub in Thornton is providing specialized online schooling for neurodiverse students facing school refusal. For students like 16-year-old Abbie Whitworth, who experienced severe anxiety and physical symptoms due to sensory stressors, the distance education model allows for a controlled environment to decompress and learn from home.

Researchers from the University of Southern Queensland, Western Sydney University, and the University of Sydney define school refusal as a condition where students feel overwhelmed by stressors that make the school environment feel unsafe or impossible. This issue is reportedly more common among neurodiverse and gender-diverse students.

While precise data is difficult to aggregate due to varying recording methods across states, a 2023 survey commissioned by the Greens found that 39 per cent of 1,000 Australian school children had been unable to attend school at some point due to stress or anxiety. Additionally, attendance levels in New South Wales public schools have seen a decline over the last six years.
