Aspen experiences resurgence of countercultural identity

Despite its global reputation as a luxury destination defined by high-end boutiques and five-star hotels, Aspen, Colorado, is experiencing a resurgence of its historical countercultural roots. This creative identity dates back to the 1940s with the founding of the Aspen Institute and has been influenced by the ‘Freak Power’ movement led by author Hunter S. Thompson over fifty years ago.

Local figures like author and gallerist DJ Watkins are working to preserve this unconventional spirit. Through venues such as the Aspen Collective gallery and Fat City Gallery, Watkins showcases works that connect Aspen’s eccentric past with contemporary artists from the Roaring Fork Valley, aiming to maintain a cultural flame amidst the town’s modern materialism.
