Asphalt plant fire in Medellín de Bravo threatens 50,000 liters of bitumen
A major fire broke out at an asphalt processing plant in the Dos Lomas area, located on the Santa Fe-Paso del Toro highway in the municipality of Medellín de Bravo. The blaze spread to two tanker trucks containing a combined 50,000 liters of chapopote (bitumen/asphalt), creating a massive column of black smoke visible from the Veracruz-Boca del Río metropolitan area.
Emergency response teams from Medellín de Bravo, Boca del Río, and Veracruz deployed at least seven water tankers and motor pumps to combat the flames. Firefighters utilized water, foam, and heavy machinery to apply gravel to persistent hotspots to prevent explosions and further spread. Security forces, including the State Police, Highway Police, Navy, and Naval Police, cordoned off the area and diverted traffic.
No injuries were reported, though ambulances remained on-site as a precaution. During the operation, emergency responders rescued several dogs found near the plant that had been covered in asphalt; the animals were taken for veterinary care and cleaning.
