Asprochoma–Messinia railway restoration demanded
Manolis Makaris, leader of the ‘First Peloponnese’ regional faction, is demanding clarity regarding the restoration of the Asprochoma–Messinia railway line. The issue arises from the removal of a section of the track to facilitate the construction of the Kalamata–Rizomylos–Pylos–Methoni road axis.
According to the project’s Environmental Terms Approval, works are planned to relocate railway infrastructure and restore the existing line following the consent of OSE. Despite this, Makaris has raised concerns about the technical design, the timeline for restoration, and who will bear the costs. He emphasizes that while the new road is necessary, it should not come at the expense of the potential reactivation of suburban rail services.
The Kalamata Municipal Council has previously expressed support for maintaining the line and exploring modern fixed-track transport between Kalamata and Messinia. Makaris is calling on the Regional Authority to ensure the implementation of environmental terms and to protect this critical public infrastructure.
